The Argyll and Bute region of Scotland is renowned for its natural beauty and history. The coast is made up of hundreds of peninsulas and bays, with sea and fresh water lochs. The Western Isles are within view; the jagged paps of Jura and the purple rugged hills of Bute. The magic of the area remains unspoilt with secluded beaches, ruined castles and mist covered mountains. The rhododendrons in June are beautiful and Argyll boasts many gardens to visit. The Isle of Bute makes a fantastic day trip as it manages to capture everything about the West Coast in a few square miles! The ‘capital’ of Rothsay is a charming Victorian Seaside resort with harbour, shops, hotels and most importantly, ice cream. There are sandy beaches, gardens and Mount Stewart house to enjoy. The ferry for Bute is just 2 miles from the Cowbarn, making it a plausible bicycle trip.

The Cowbarn itself is on a quiet coastal road, now only used by other residents or sightseers. It is positioned above the road with the local farmer’s field in front of the garden. |

This setting offers wonderful opportunities to enjoy the beautiful surroundings. Scramble over the back gate and explore the rugged hills behind the property – watching out for sheep and pheasants, or meander down to the pebbled beach of Fearnoch Bay to watch for seals and sea birds. Sailors are fond of this area due to its sheltered bays and their antics can be a source of entertainment to Cowbarn visitors. The coastal road is perfect for cycling, especially with children or for strolling along to any of the other delightful bays. |
